Law enforcement officers opened a criminal case against Alexei Ivanov under Article 319 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation in March. On February 24, the activist held a picket against the special operation in Ukraine, the police approaching him and demanding that he introduce himself. Ivanov responded by calling them "fascists."

Ivanov's words were recorded by a law enforcement officer's body camera. When the social activist found out about the criminal case, he left the country. The Ministry of Internal Affairs indicated his nationality as "Russian" in the search data, while the activist speaks and keeps social networks in the Komi language.

Alexei Ivanov is an opposition activist from Komi, who talks to government officials exclusively in the Komi language. In January 2021, a protocol was drawn up against the activist under the article on violation of the established procedure for holding a rally (Part 5 of Article 20.2 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation). He participated in an action in support of Alexei Navalny.

In court, Ivanov began talking in the Komi language. The judge called his behavior a "circus", but still provided an interpreter for the meeting.
