Cherepovets human rights activist Gregory Winter has been found guilty of disseminating false information about the Russian army. In anticipation of the verdict, he requested Vladimir Putin's permission for assisted suicide in the event of a prison sentence. Winter is concerned that the lack of necessary treatment in prison could lead to his death.

In August 2022, Winter was jailed for his anti-war posts. The activist reported instances of torture and health problems. Subsequently, the court modified the measure of restraint to house arrest.

During Winter's time in detention, one of his cats passed away. In response, the activist sought assistance in finding new homes for the nine cats he had rescued from the streets.

The human rights organization Memorial has recognized Winter as a political prisoner. In October 2022, they revealed that Winter was being denied insulin and other essential medications. Activists mobilized funds to purchase the required medication for him and exerted pressure on the court to change Winter's detention to house arrest.

Winter led the Vologda branch of the 'Za Prava Cheloveka' ('For Human Rights') movement.
