Forty-nine councilors from the "United Russia" and Liberal Democrats parties voted for canceling the elections, while 13 others, from the Communist and the "New People" factions, voted against it. One councilor abstained. The next mayor of Novosibirsk will be elected by the legislative assembly.
Before the meeting, pickets were held against the cancellation of elections in front of the legislative assembly building.
The incumbent mayor of Novosibirsk is communist Anatoly Lokot who won the 2019 election. The runner-up was Sergei Boyko, an activist and supporter of Alexei Navalny. He received 18.5 percent as a self-nominated candidate.
The possibility of canceling direct elections in Novosibirsk was first mentioned by the governor of the Novosibirsk region, Andrei Travnikov, last year. The initiative was supported by the Public Supervisory Commission. As an excuse for canceling, the authorities referred to the low turnout at the previous elections.
Novosibirsk is one of the three cities with a population of over a million (the other two are Moscow and St. Petersburg) and direct elections of the mayor. In October 2022, direct mayoral elections were canceled in Tomsk.
