The collective appeal to Sergey Menyaylo, the head of North Ossetia, was signed by the leaders of 12 social organizations. They claim that the decline in the indigenous population in the region "is becoming irreversible"Â and that "cemeteries in Vladikavkaz are overfilled"Â with the bodies of North Ossetian youth. The authors of the letter estimate the number of deceased to be around 1,000.
The activists also characterized a week-long carnival held in Vladikavkaz in July 2024 as "dancing on bones."
"Are such 'mass festivities' really acceptable in a situation where Russia faces a mortal threat of physical destruction, the Ossetian people are progressively dying out, and the republic itself ranks at the bottom of the country’s socio-economic standings? It is unclear what victories you are celebrating," wrote the leaders of the social organizations.
The authors of the appeal urged Sergey Menyaylo to disclose the number of their fellow residents killed at the front lines, hold a week-long mourning period, and ask Putin to prohibit the conscription of Ossetians with further deployment to Ukraine and declare an early demobilization for those already at war.
Menyaylo has not yet commented on the appeal.
