According to human rights activists, 20-year-old Selima Ismailova suffered physical abuse from her father, who also threatened her with killing and breaking “all her limbs.” She fled her home and attempted to travel to Germany. However, on June 12, she was apprehended at Vnukovo airport. Following her detention, her lawyers lost contact with her. Human rights activist Alyona Popova initiated a petition demanding to disclose her location and let medical professionals examine her. The petition has garnered over 28,000 signatures.
On July 7, Chechnya's human rights ombudsman, Mansur Soltayev, shared a video featuring Selima Ismailova. In his post, he mentioned that the young woman was at home and requested that “those fabricators leave her alone and stop spreading false information about her disappearance.”
Soltayev stated, "Psychologists have worked with her and on her thought process, and she expressed gratitude for now being with her family. She has a deep love for her father, and he reciprocates that love."В
He referred to the activists who tried to assist the woman as "Western agents" whose purpose is to "slander the Caucasus and all of Russia."
Instances of women attempting to escape domestic violence in Chechnya occur periodically. For example, in 2021, Khalimat Taramova, who had sought refuge in a shelter for human rights defenders in Makhachkala, was abducted by individuals associated with Kadyrov. Taramova was trying to escape her parents, who subjected her to “treatment” due to her homosexuality. A local television station aired a story about her, showcasing her life with her family. Taramova is the daughter of Ayub Taramov, the director of Grozny's Grand Park shopping mall.
