Alina A., a student in the 8A class at Bryansk Gymnasium #5, secretly brought her father's hunting rifle to school. Arriving late for her biology class, she began firing at her classmates, fatally shooting one of them and injuring five more. Subsequently, Alina took her own life. Two of the wounded children were admitted to the ER, and authorities decided to transfer them to Moscow for further treatment.
Channels closely connected to law enforcement reported that the girl had brought the firearm from her home. Authorities detained and questioned her father, and Alina's twin sister also underwent interrogation.
The Investigative Committee has opened a murder case (Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The possible catalyst for this tragic event might have been the bullying the girl endured in her class. According to the teacher questioned by the investigators, the day before the shooting Alina looked “more dead than alive.”
Over the past five years, twelve shootings have occurred in Russia, with five resulting in the deaths of schoolchildren, students, or teachers. The total number of casualties in shootings since 2019 has reached 38.
The tragic event at Bryansk Gymnasium marks the fourth attack by a student or graduate on an educational establishment since the beginning of 2023.
