Caregiver Svetlana Vedernikova stated that on January 14, the management of the social rehabilitation center gave her an ultimatum: either withdraw her candidacy from the election or face dismissal.
Maksim Shumar, a war veteran who served in Ukraine, registered as an independent candidate on December 2 while undergoing treatment in Primorsky Krai for an injury. The following day, he was summoned by the leadership of his military unit in Ivanovo, where he was allegedly threatened with criminal charges for unauthorized absence if he failed to comply.
"The first thing they made me do at the unit was write a letter explaining how I could dare to run for office as an opposition candidate. Because, as we all know, only United Russia members are allowed to be patriots of this country,"В Shumar said.
Shumar also allegedly learned that he is "under the observation"В of the 98th Airborne Brigade commander. He informed 7x7 that he remains at the military unit and is starving, as his injured leg prevents him from walking to the canteen, and no one delivers food to him.
Shumar believes his summons to the military unit was intended to prevent him from campaigning. He said that military personnel also attempted to confiscate his phone. In his opinion, the pressure was orchestrated at the request of Primorsky Krai Governor Oleg Kozhemyako and members of the United Russia party. The serviceman also reported that in the village of Chkalovskoye, authorities forced another independent candidate, a state emergency service rescuer, to withdraw from the election under the threat of dismissal.
Shumar suspects that members of United Russia fear losing to independent candidates, as many local residents are dissatisfied with landfill issues and severe air pollution caused by nearby factories.
"I understand that saying this to you is as futile as talking to a wall. However, I hope my example shows that opposing the authorities may feel like battling windmills, but it is a fight worth fighting,"В Shumar said, addressing Putin and local citizens.
The early election for deputies in the Spassky District of Primorsky Krai is scheduled for February 16. Among the candidates, 24 are independents, while only 15 represent political parties such as United Russia, A Just Russia, and the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR).
