In August 2024, a minor who worked at a café in Kyzyl was raped. The court arrested an individual on charges of sexual assault.
In December, rumors began circulating on social media that the girl had allegedly been raped by a migrant who also infected her with HIV. According to Sapa Media, a local entrepreneur encouraged Kyzyl residents to take justice into their own hands.
Subsequently, several masked individuals rampaged through the RPS warehouses, where many migrants work, capturing and beating anyone they encountered. Videos of the attacks were shared on the far-right Telegram channel Mnogonatsional ("Multinational"). The Ministry of Health reported that several "representatives of Central Asian diasporas"Â were injured.
The Investigative Committee refuted claims that the girl had been infected with HIV. Those involved in the warehouse attacks were detained and charged with hooliganism.
The Tuva government and the Department of Internal Affairs warned residents of the potential criminal and administrative charges they could face for participating in riots or inciting "unlawful activities."Â Officials also urged locals to avoid areas where such incidents might occur and to "dissuade friends and children from reckless actions."Â Police patrols have been reinforced in Kyzyl.
This marks at least the third major conflict involving migrants in Russia this year. The first occurred in January in Yakutsk, where dozens of citizens protested the murder of a local resident. Republic head Aysen Nikolayev claimed that the suspect was from Tajikistan. In October, residents of Chelyabinsk Oblast attacked "Roma homes" after the murder of a female taxi driver.
