The event took place at the memorial to the victims of political terror in Yoshkar-Ola. The police detained 17-year-old Kirill Voytovich because of his poster in the Belarusian language that read: "Night of Poets. October 29-30. Eternal Memory to the Victims of Bolshevik Terror. Live Forever." Voytovich placed his poster in one of the niches of the memorial.

The police refused to use an online translator to avoid any questions about the content of the poster. Voytovich's mother later retrieved him from the police station.

The Yoshkar-Ola administration had turned down a request for a rally limiting the participants to the ceremony of laying flowers at the memorial.

On October 29-30, 1937, a group of Belarusian and Jewish intellectuals were executed in the NKVD prison in Minsk. This tragedy that took the lives of 130 people is known as the "Night of the Exectuted Poets."В

On October 29 and 30, memorial events took place in several Russian regions. In one of the two rallies in Novosibirsk people protested against political repressions in today’s Russia.
