Tomsk Catholics have raised money and restored a local memorial to repressed Poles. In November 2022, the memorial endured a malicious act of vandalism. Unknown individuals removed the cross and plaques from the monument. Subsequently, the police initiated a criminal case of theft.
The restoration of the memorial was made possible through contributions from parishioners of the Tomsk Catholic church and the support of the Order of Mother Teresa. An opening ceremony was held, graced by the presence of four priests.
Last November witnessed a series of vandalism incidents targeting sites in Tomsk associated with the memory of exiled Poles. On November 11th, unidentified offenders tore the plaque from a memorial stone dedicated to the Poles. Just two days later, someoneВ stole a plaque from a building that once housed a Polish orphanage during the 1940s. In the village of Polozovo, vandals destroyed a cross and shattered a memorial tablet with the names of the Poles executed in 1938.
