The court in Chechnya found Zarema Musayeva guilty of violence against policemen and imposed a 5.5-year prison sentence, matching the prosecution's request.

On the day of the verdict, journalist Yelena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov were assaulted in Chechnya as they were heading to the trial of Musayeva. Despite the attack on the defendant’s lawyer, the court refused to postpone the session.

Milashina expressed her determination to still travel to Grozny to the hearing on the appeal of Musayeva’s sentence, despite the physical assault and mistreatment.

Zarema Musayeva is the wife of former federal judge Saidi Yangulbayev and the mother of Ibrahim and Baysangur Yangulbayev. In January 2022, law enforcement officers forcibly took the diabetic Musayeva from her apartment in Nizhny Novgorod to Chechnya as a witness in a fraud case. Subsequently, she was accused of assaulting a police officer and detained.

The Yangulbayev brothers have been critical of Ramzan Kadyrov's regime, while their father, Saidi Yangulbayev, refused to publicly condemn his sons' activities. The eldest son, Ibrahim, established an opposition telegram channel called 1ADAT.
