According to TASS, Zelenin and Turiansky, acting "in the interests of the nationalist units” of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, conspired to destroy a section of the railroad near the town of Tomarovka. The plan was to sabotage the rails before a moving train, which, according to the investigation, would’ve resulted in damage to equipment and led to casualties.

The two men intended to publish photos and videos of the incident on the Internet; they were also sending information about the Russian military to the Peacemaker Ukrainian website.

The FSB detained them in March 2022. The court sentenced the men to three years and six months in prison.

This is Russia's first sentence under the amended law on sabotage that was tightened after the outbreak of armed conflict in Ukraine. According to lawyer Pavel Chikov, the number of criminal cases under this law "expectedly and predictably" increased in 2022. In his opinion, this is a direct consequence of the armed conflict that started on February 24, 2022. Chikov believes that the authorities are using long sentences in an attempt to prevent a "guerilla war."В

The intimidation also includes an increase in cases of desertion and abandoning the military unit. Pavel Chikov says that typically such cases are investigated quickly and punished with imprisonment.
