Yaroslav Shaposhnikov has signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry to join the conflict in Ukraine, accompanied by five other colleagues from the mayor's office in Vorkuta. It is unclear how long he will be away from the Komi Republic.

Viktor Vorobyov, the head of the Communist faction in the Komi State Council, says that the mayor's decision to go to Ukraine may not be due to patriotism, but rather an attempt to evade criminal charges. The Vorkuta prosecutor's office had launched a second case of negligence against Shaposhnikov in March after the wastewater treatment plant collapsed.

In the fall of 2022, Shaposhnikov publicly claimed  that men volunteer to war because they are "fed up with their wives."

In November 2022, Alexander Sapozhnikov, the Mayor of Chita, resigned from his position and headed to Ukraine. He cited his experience as a paratrooper and his readiness to defend his homeland as reasons for his departure.

Mikhail Degtyarev, the Governor of the Khabarovsk region, also expressed his desire to join the conflict but lamented that he could not "leave his office" even if he wanted to. As a result, over 62,000 people signed a petition requesting Degtyarev's removal from office so that he could pursue his dream.
