Sergei Stenkin, 28, from the town of Solovyovsk, was taken to the army in September 2022. His mother had appealed the decision of the military enlistment office trying to get it reversed. She reported her severe illnesses and the fact that other than her son there was no one to take care of her. The woman recovers after abdominal surgery and needs an operation on her knee. Without support, she can’t even walk. However, the woman’s appeal was declined.
In October Sergei took a leave of absence and went to Novosibirsk to apply for a position of a social worker for his mother. Because he couldn’t submit all the necessary documents in one day Stenkin decided to stay and did not return to his unit in time.
On his return to the Amur region, he was detained by the police and charged with leaving his unit without permission. Stenkin faces up to 10 years in prison. His lawyer insists that charges against Stenkin should be dropped because he left his regiment due to severe life circumstances.
The first case against a mobilized man for deserting his regiment was initiated last October in Ulan-Ude. The first verdicts for the same violation were passed by courts in Velikiy Novgorod and Solnechnogorsk (Moscow region) in early December. The defendants got suspended sentences. On January 10, the Vladimir garrison court sentenced a mobilized man from Lipetsk who escaped from his unit and went on a 12-day drinking spree to 2 years in prison. On January 31, a court in the Samara region sentenced another defendant to the same prison term.
